Comparisons between Teaser and Theatrical trailers - Animation

I was given the aspect of animated trailers to do a comparison between theatrical and teaser trailers so i chose to analyse both trailers from the animated movie "Up".

Up Teaser Trailer

  • 1:05 minutes in length
  • Doesn't use any clips from the film
  • Creates audience awareness of the film with out giving much of the plot away
  • One word of dialogue used throughout the entire trailer
  • Action builds with the diegetic sound
  • No music is used
  • The camera points at one singular point in the sky the entire time
  • No cuts are used
  • Title and date are given
  • Only one character is introduced

Up Theatrical Trailer

  • 2:31 minutes in length, significantly longer than the teaser
  • Contains mainly clips from the film
  • Dialogue is used right from the start
  • Contains lots of cuts
  • Several key characters are introduced
  • Voice over is used
  • There is non-diegetic music played over parts of it
  • The basics of the plot are hinted at
  • Other films made by the same people are listed to give the audience an idea of the type of film it will be
  • Action is shown
  • Humor is used throughout
  • There is text on the screen
  • The pace of the trailer builds to a climax to increase tension
