Title Decision

Why 'Larkspur'?

We decided to call our film 'Larkspur' and make it the surname of our protagonist. A larkspur is a deep purple coloured flower, that is poisonous if consumed by a human. We thought that this would metaphorically represent the danger of our mentally unstable protagonist, and create a motif for our ancillary tasks. We also liked the idea of someone that appears normal, like the flower, being potentially being really dangerous, just like a girl who looks normal but has deep rooted issues under the surface.

Film titles that had inspired us included the 1992 drama-thriller 'Poison Ivy' starring Drew Barrymore, and the 2013 Woody Allen film, 'Blue Jasmine'. The title characters in those films are similar to our protagonist as they both demonstrate mental instability. Both titles include the name of the protagonist however still have a level of ambiguity which we think is important, especially when making a trailer that is supposed to entice audiences.

When doing our research for the trailer titles and cast names, we sent out a survey to  decide the first name of our titular character. The results were as follows:

The result shows Scarlett as the most popular name, and we liked how the character would be able to identify with the traditional image of red danger. It is a subtle signifier that goes well with the genre.
