Blumler and Katz came up with the uses and gratifications theory. They state that media products are used to fulfil gratification of social or psychological needs of an individual.
Contrary to a lot of theories this one suggests that the audience aren't passive users and in fact that they are responsible for choosing media to meet their desires and needs to achieve gratification.
The theory states that if people are in a certain mood they use media texts to change that mood:
For example... If people are stressed they may seek relaxing media, if they are bored they may seek exciting media.
As we are creating a psychological thriller the most likely reasons for people seeking our film out to watch would be for excitement.
