Roland Barthes (1915-1980) was a French literary theorist. As mentioned in the previous video Bathes came up with a set of codes applied to media products. He described text as "A galaxy of signifiers, not a structure of signified"
The most relevant of Barthes codes to our work are the hermeneutic code and the enigma code;
The Hermeneutic code states that the story avoids telling the truth or revealing all the facts in order to drop clues in throughout to create mystery. This is relevant to a psychological thriller like our film as suspense is a vital part of this genre. It is also relevant to a trailer because you don't want to give away the entire plot.
The Enigma code states that tension is built and the audience is left guessing what happens next. Again this is key to a trailer because you are supposed to keep the audience guessing and wanting more. Tension is also a key aspect of the thriller genre so will be important to us when we are creating our trailer.
